Soap Nuts

Keep Your laundry Smelling Fresh and Clean with Soap Nuts!

Most Laundry detergent contains artificial dyes and fragrances, which can fade your clothes and irritate your skin. Liquid laundry detergent comes in plastic containers that usually end up taking valuable landfill space.

Soap Nuts

A 50 ounce (1.5 litre) container of liquid laundry soap costs anywhere from $4 to $10, and usually washes about 26-30 loads. You might be thinking of the old saying “Laundry soap doesn’t grow on trees!” This statement would be wrong however, laundry soap does grow on trees!

Sapindus is a type of tree that grows in tropical climates. It’s fruit is called “soap nuts”, because the shells contain saponin, a natural, environmentally friendly detergent that can be used to wash clothes. Thirty nuts is the equivalent of a fifty ounce container of liquid detergent.

How To Use Soap Nuts

To use, simply place four or five of them in a drawstring bag, and put it in your wash before you put your clothes in. If you don’t have a small drawstring bag, I’ve found that a nylon knee high sock tied off on the end works really well. Hot water is what releases the saponin, and you can reuse the bag of 5 nuts about 5 times.

For cold wash cycles, place the nuts in a bag and soak them in a cup of very hot water for about three to four minutes. Pour the soapy liquid, as well as the soap nuts into the washing machine, then load your clothes and start the cycle.

When they turn soft and mushy, it’s time to throw them out. They are biodegradable, so they will work great on a compost pile.

How Effective Are Soap Nuts?

Where to Buy?

I know from experience that regular laundry detergent can cause skin rashes. Instead of experimenting with the various different brands of detergent, why not give these all natural nuts a try? They won’t irritate your skin, and they will keep your clothes from fading.

There are various internet sites where you can find these nuts for sale. Yes, they are available on Ebay, and there are currently some great deals available. Buy some and try them out. After a while, you will wonder why you used anything else.
