Period Housing and Energy Efficiency

by Michael Scott
(Sheffield)

When we think about energy efficiency, we don’t normally associate it with period properties. David Sherlock, an energy saving specialist on solid wall properties for Mark Group, is one person who does associate the two and as such explains how modern insulation can actually be the perfect partner for aged properties.

Cavity wall and loft insulation are quick, easy and simple to install. They can help homeowners save hundreds of pounds per year on household heating bills. If your property was built before 1920 however, the chances are it has a solid wall construction and as such, no cavity to fill.

For those homeowners, all is not lost, period properties can still help the nation reach emission reduction targets as David explains.

One solution to this problem is external wall insulation (EWI) which involves thermally cladding the outside walls of a property. A secondary solution and one which is more ideal for period houses is internal wall insulation (IWI).

IWI is a very cost effective and adaptive solution from which the benefits can be felt immediately by the homeowner. It’s worthwhile pointing out though, that whilst cavity wall insulation can be installed in just a few hours and with minimal disruption, internal wall insulation is a little more involved. IWI often requires a complete internal refurbishment but enables the homeowner to not lose an ounce of the properties period charm.

5 things to consider when insulating your property:

1. Talk to a reputable and professional installer to give impartial advice on the most suitable insulation solution for your property

2. Find out if you are eligible for any grants, visit www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

3. Research the insulation products available, some are made from more environmentally-friendly materials than others and can future-proof your property

4. In addition to insulating your property, consider making a few lifestyle changes to conserve the amount you use, the savings will soon add up

5. If you are thinking about redecorating wait until you have made your decision on insulation
