My questions of recycling

by Wei-An
(New York)

Hello, I'm a middle school student and I'm writing a report about recycling.

I'm curious about what would happen to something that you were recycling but it didn't get rinsed out properly or if someone throws something that can't be recycled into the recycling truck, would the workers help to separate it?

I also want to know what will be the best way to encourage people to recycle, thank you very much.

Recycling in New York
by: Caroline

There is loads of information on this site about recycling in New York that would help you with your report. I'm also sure if you contacted them they would be really helpful with your specific questions about your location and recycling.

I always think the best way to encourage other people to recycle is to be seen to be doing it yourself, and for it to be relatively straightforward for them to start doing it.

Recycling is really just a change in your daily habits of what you do with your waste. It's easy enough to throw everything in the same bin but to change your habits does initially take a bit of effort.

If you can make it seem easy to your friends and people you visit, they won't be so intimidated about also starting to recycle things. Tell them where they can take their bottles, paper, etc. if it's not picked up from their house. If they have a garden you could show them how to compost. Even make a little list they can pin on the wall for a reminder!
