LED Lightbulbs Do you want to cut your lighting energy usage by 95%!!

There are now LED lights available that will produce a similar amount of light but use only 3 to 5 watts of energy per hour, whereas a standard incandescent light uses 60 watts plus.

Reduce your home energy use through the use of LED's, from LED tv's to LED bulbs for your home lighting. There are LED bulbs to suit all manner of applications from standard old fashioned incandescent globes, halogens, led christmas tree lights, LED tv's, led auto light bulbs, led garden lighting and many many more uses.

What are LED lights?

LED or Light Emitting Diodes are a semiconductor light source. The LED is based on the semiconductor diode. When a diode is forward biased (switched on), electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. from Wikipedia

Why are LED's more efficient?

Standard old fashioned incandescent globes use electricity to produce heat which in turn produces light, halogens are slightly more efficient than incandescents but basically produce light in the same way, this is an inefficient way of producing light.

There is even LED street lighting available that uses solar power to run (see picture below).

Benefits of LED lighting

Low Heat: - produce very little heat so don’t heat your home in Summer and will reduce the risk of fire in your ceiling
Long Lasting: - at around 50,000 hours which is around 10 times longer than old halogens or incandescents
On/Off: - LEDs are great for use in applications where the light is frequently turned on-off, unlike fluorescent lamps that burn out more quickly when cycled frequently.
Efficiency: - LEDs produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs
Non-Toxic: - LEDs do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps.

I’ve replaced pretty much all the lights in our home with LED’s, so far I’ve used cheaper LED’s that I bought off Ebay. Of the 1st batch only one has failed out of ten, the second batch cost slightly more and were labelled CREE, they give off a better light and so far haven’t failed in 12 months of use.
