What are LED lights?LED or Light Emitting Diodes are a semiconductor light source. The LED is based on the semiconductor diode. When a diode is forward biased (switched on), electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. from WikipediaWhy are LED's more efficient?Standard old fashioned incandescent globes use electricity to produce heat which in turn produces light, halogens are slightly more efficient than incandescents but basically produce light in the same way, this is an inefficient way of producing light.There is even LED street lighting available that uses solar power to run (see picture below).
