How to Dispose of Pet Waste?

Grrrr.......I must learn to be more careful !!!!

We currently dispose of our pet's waste by throwing it out with the garbage, is this the best way, or can we turn it into compost for the plants?.

Disposal of Pet Waste
by: Anonymous

Slight problem with flushing the litter down the toilet. Most litters sold are mined clay, with additives to clump urine. Not only are our landfills overtaxed, but our water treatment plants are, too. It isn't recommended to flush any litter through the water system, unless it is designed for that - like World's Best or Yesterday's News or other flushable litter. It will state on the package. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people like me with multiple cats, and none of them like any of the flushable litters. Some people train their cats to use the toilet when they're kittens. But the pet waste disposal problem is a big one, and it won't be solved by flushing. Flushing clumping clay litter will not only overwork an already outdated water treatment system, it will also clog your pipes at home and could lead to an overflow or pipe leakage or both. I think we should move towards the composters, and we should also move away from mining for litter, which is a destructive practice.

BokashiPetCycle: Pickle Your Pet Poo
by: Krista

Interesting question about composting manure! However, composting is not the answer due to odor, length of time and doesn't kill toxoplasmosis, E. coli, salmonella and other parasites from seeping into municipal water.

The leading cause of ground water contamination in the U.S. is pet waste. Seattle-based doctor, Lawrence Green, has created BokashiPetCycle, the World?s first green solution to pet waste to transform your pets poop into usable soil to help the environment.

Dr. Green's system safely and rapidly converts pet waste through a pickling process that uses microbes to break down the pet poop that can be used for your ornamental plants and your lawn.

How to Dispose of Pet Waste?

Hi Alicia

Many thanks for your very interesting question!.

Believe it or not each year American pet owners alone have some 10 million tons of pet waste to dispose of from their cats & dogs!, with the vast majority of it ending up dumped in plastic bags in Landfills ,where it will take up to 500 YEARS to degrade!!.

There are several alternative methods of disposal, here are just a few:

* dump into plastic bags in landfills - definately not.

* collect & place in biodegradable bags(available in hardware stores & pet shops), then dispose of through landfill - better than using plastic bags, but not helping the problems with the volumes of landfill required.

* collect & flush down the toilet, thus it is handled the same way as human waste - this is a great way to dispose of & ecologically sound.

* buy/build a "pet waste composter/digester" - there are several Composter type products on the market, or you can make one yourself, they work fine & Recycle into good compost, but do not use the compost on or near vegetable gardens, or near storm drains where the compost could be washed into, as the process disposes of the pet waste, but does still leave harmful pathogens such as "E.coli" because the composter does not create sufficient heat to kill all the germs in the waste.

My personal suggestion would be to flush it down the toilet, as this is the simplest & cleanest way of disposal, without creating further problems for our overworked landfills!!.
