Hazardous Household Chemicals



Do you have hazardous household chemicals in your Home?

Did you know that department stores are required to carry material safety data sheets? Material safety data sheets are forms that let you know a chemicals toxic properties. Department stores are required to keep them because of all the toxic products they sell. If you don’t think you’ve seen them for sale, then you would be wrong, because they are in common everyday household products. Here are just a few of the hazardous household chemicals you may have at home.

Air Fresheners

Many air fresheners contain formaldehyde, which is also used as an embalming agent. Formaldehyde can trigger asthma attacks, as well as watery eyes and headaches. In some cases, it has been known to cause memory loss.

Window Cleaners

Window Cleaners contain diethylene glycol, which has a sweet taste but is poisonous. Young children mistake the blue liquid for punch, and since it doesn’t taste bad there is no deterrent for them to not drink it, which can damage their central nervous system, kidneys, and liver.

Floor Cleaners

Floor cleaners also contain diethylene glycol, and they also contain petroleum solvents and ammonia. Petroleum solvents are highly flammable, and they have been linked to skin cancer.

Household Bleach

Bleach is also know as sodium hypochlorite. It will burn your skin and eyes if you come in contact with it, and mixing it with other household cleaners can cause chlorine gas, which is fatal if inhaled.

Toilet Bowl Cleaners

Toilet Bowl Cleaners contain Hypochloric acid and Sodium bisulfate acid, which will burn skin it comes in contact with it, and ingestion is usually fatal.

Dishwashing Detergents

Dishwashing detergents contain dry chlorine in a highly concentrated form. Chlorine is is also used to clean swimming pools of algae and insects, and it is highly poisonous. Chlorine gas was used as a weapon in WW1, and now it’s an ingredient used to wash our dishes!

Furniture Polish

Furniture polish contains petroleum products that are highly flammable and may cause skin and lung cancer.

These are just a few of the hazardous chemicals found in everyday household cleaning products. There are various safe alternatives to most of these products, but if you must use them, keep them out of reach of children and household pets. An overhead locked cabinet or a locked shed is a good place for storage of these products. Never, ever mix the chemicals in household cleaning products, they can give off a gas that can be fatal.
