Cleaning with Baking Soda A not very well kept secret is that common baking soda can be used in various cleaning situations. It was more commonly used a scant 40 years ago, but since that time thousands of other toxic chemical filled cleaning products have hit the market, confusing the modern consumer. Now, with pollution control a major concern, people are rediscovering baking soda as a viable alternative.
Baking soda is a chemical, but it is relatively safe. Its scientific name is sodium bicarbonate, and it has been used as a cleaner since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used it for bushing there teeth, and it was also used in the process of mummification.
Baking Soda For Laundry
I know there isn’t much of a need for mummification in modern times, but baking soda is great for using in the laundry. Instead of using liquid fabric softener which can cause skin rashes, simply put half a cup of baking soda in the rinse cycle. Using baking soda with your whites and brights will make them whiter and brighter. (And they will smell good too!)
Baking Soda For Grout
Does your bathroom have a bad case of the grout? Baking soda will take it away. Grout is the moldy grime that builds up in the cracks between your tiles. To get rid of the grout, simply mix baking soda with water in equal proportions, and apply to the grout with a washcloth. The grout will disappear in mere minutes.
Baking Soda As A Drain Cleaner
Grime and slime will build up in your drain, and it will eventually clog your drain if it is left unchecked. Adding half a cup of baking soda to two cups of warm vinegar will clean your drain. After you have poured the concoction into the drain, simply flush with warm water. If you do this once every three months, your drain pipes should stay free of grimy build up.
Baking Soda for Cleaning Silver
Baking Soda is great for cleaning silver. If you have a valuable piece of silver that has tarnish buildup, simply sprinkle some baking soda on a damp cloth, and polish the silver until the tarnish is gone. You will be impressed with the result.
Toxic Chemicals
Toxic chemical cleaning products can pollute water supplies as well as kill household pets. When some common cleaning products are mixed, the resulting fumes can be fatal to humans. It’s much safer and more effective cleaning with baking soda as a cleaner.
